Mates with Benefits: When and How Sexual Cannibalism Is Adaptive
نویسنده
چکیده
Sexual cannibalism occurs in several arthropod taxa, but its evolutionary significance has long been debated. A new study shows how females that eat their mates benefit in ways that go well beyond caloric nutrition.

Female praying mantids use sexual cannibalism as a foraging strategy to increase fecundity
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the evolution of sexual cannibalism. The foraging strategy hypothesis states that sexual cannibalism may arise as an adaptive foraging strategy, providing females with the nutrients to increase future fecundity. Yet, very few studies have found that nourishment through cannibalism translates into increased fecundity. One explanation for this may ...
متن کاملSexual Cannibalism: High Incidence in a Natural Population with Benefits to Females
BACKGROUND Sexual cannibalism may be a form of extreme sexual conflict in which females benefit more from feeding on males than mating with them, and males avoid aggressive, cannibalistic females in order to increase net fitness. A thorough understanding of the adaptive significance of sexual cannibalism is hindered by our ignorance of its prevalence in nature. Furthermore, there are serious do...
متن کاملAdaptive genetic complementarity in mate choice coexists with selection for elaborate sexual traits.
Choice of genetically unrelated mates is widely documented, yet it is not known how self-referential mate choice can co-occur with commonly observed directional selection on sexual displays. Across 10 breeding seasons in a wild bird population, we found strong fitness benefits of matings between genetically unrelated partners and show that self-referential choice of genetically unrelated mates ...
متن کاملCoy Males and Seductive Females in the Sexually Cannibalistic Colonial Spider, Cyrtophora citricola
The abundance of sperm relative to eggs selects for males that maximize their number of mates and for females that choose high quality males. However, in many species, males exercise mate choice, even when they invest little in their offspring. Sexual cannibalism may promote male choosiness by limiting the number of females a male can inseminate and by biasing the sex ratio toward females becau...

Benefits of size dimorphism and copulatory silk wrapping in the sexually cannibalistic nursery web spider, Pisaurina mira" (2016). Eileen Hebets Publications. Paper 54. For most males, reproductive success is dependent on the ability to acquire mates and successfully fertilize a female's eggs [1,2]. Research across diverse animal taxa has documented elaborate courtship displays and seemingly co...
